FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Honduras

Do I have to be in the medical profession or have any knowledge of medicine to be able to participate?

No, there are many jobs to be done around the clinic and with the children, such as running the front reception, pharmacy, or even doing basic tasks such as taking weight and blood pressure. No medical knowledge is necessary!

Who is eligible to go?

We welcome people of all ages and from all professions; we have families that come as well as individuals alone. Every talent is used, from electricians to piano players, to medical students and painters! No matter the age, there is always something to do in the clinic and out in the rural villages.

What do we do on a typical trip?

If you are planning on attending the June Medical Fair, we spend around 3 days in the clinic seeing patients. The villagers are alerted that we will be coming and the clinic is open and free. We often rent out fun games for the village children to play while they wait for their appointment. The rest of the week we go out into the rural villages and set up a guerrilla style clinic so that those villagers that are unable to travel to the clinic may receive medical attention as well. We also fit in a souvenir shopping stop within the week!

Do I need to speak Spanish to go to Honduras?

Though helpful, it is not necessary. Many of our volunteers don’t speak Spanish and have still been able to overcome the language barrier with the children through their actions. However, it doesn’t hurt to learn a few phrases before you go! Here are some useful links to learn simple Spanish phrases:

How much does it cost for a trip to Honduras?

It depends on the month, however if bought reasonably ahead of time, tickets can range from $250 to $500. If leaving from Orlando, there is one stop in Miami. If leaving from New York, there is one stop in Atlanta. Food and lodging is $35 a night in our air conditioned apartments above the clinic; $35 includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner and transportation everywhere. For more information, please refer to the Planning a Trip page.

How often are trips?

We host a big medical fair every late June and it is when the most volunteers come out. In between there are smaller groups that travel to Honduras. For more information, please refer to the Planning a Trip page.

What if I cannot come on the exact day or leave at the same time as everyone else?

We may be able to arrange for a separate pick up if we are notified ahead of time. Please contact TripPlanning@lukeworldmissions.org for any questions.
